Today I have the pleasure of speaking with Julie Young, a former pro cyclist and US National cycling team member with a 12 plus year racing career. Julie raced for pro teams like Saturn and is considered one of America’s most dominant European stage racers of her era.
Today as a “retired” pro she continues to push herself, competing and winning in mountain bike, gravel and trail running events. With recent acheivements including winning 2019 Single Speed US National championships and the singlespeed category at the Leadville 100 mountain bike race in 2018, both of which over the age of 50. She also competes in trail running where she won the 50k Trail National Championships.
Julie currently works as a sports scientist in California and is also the owner of Julie Young Training where she provides private coaching for endurance athletes.
In our talk Julie shares how you can become a better biker. We will talk briefly about her career and how today even though she is retired she continues to race and challenge herself. We talk about her personal training routine and what she does to keep herself racing fit.
We also talk about her coaching philosophy, how she develops training plans for her athletes and what the key ingredients of her training plans are. She talks about the importance of cross training and also including strength, mobility, flexibility, postural stability and activationg work in your training. We discuss how to avoid overtraining and how to optimize your results and performance. Julie also shares her insights into how to ensure your longevity in any endurance sport.
Julie also talks about how she does not live her life fixated on what science and society tells her what she should be doing based on her age, but rather focuses on using every day to continue to learn and improve.
