The Life Changing Power of Adventure

In today’s LEGEND LIFE STORY I will be sharing my interview with Belinda Kirk who is a British explorer, adventurer, expedition leader and social entrepreneur. Belinda’s life of adventure began when she was 18 years old and went to Tanzania to study monkeys, an experience which she says had a profound impact on her sense of self-confidence and outlook in life and saw her come back as another person. It is experience that she says lead her on a path that has seen her for the past twenty-five years, leading dozens of international expeditions and remote filming trips to wild areas of the world.

Belinda’s adventures include travelling across Africa by herself, traversing Nicaragua on foot, sailing across the Atlantic and searching for camels in China’s Desert of Death. In 2010, she captained the first all-female rowing team to circumnavigate Britain non-stop, completing the journey in 51 days and in the process breaking a Guinness Book World Record.

Belinda is also the founder of Explorers Connect, a social enterprise that seeks to inspire people to adventure more and connects people to opportunities for adventures and expeditions in the UK and overseas. Belinda also organized the first Wild Night Out in July 2017, a national day of outdoor adventure, with the aim of encouraging people to try new experiences

Belinda says that adventure has been a ‘therapy’ and a source of purpose and fun for herself and that it changed her life and she has seen first hand it transform people of all ages, walks of life and abilities/disabilities. She has now dedicated herself to discovering how to harness the benefits of adventure and share it with others.

Belinda has been quoted as saying: “I believe adventure is a necessity of the human spirit. The modern world has become too easy, too averse to challenge. This is having a negative effect on our physical and mental health. We need a revolution, to learn how to live adventurously”

Today Belinda is a leading voice for promoting the psychological and wellness benefits of adventure and our need for an #AdventureRevolution. She is also the author of the book Adventure Revolution, The life-changing power of choosing challenge.

It is the first book to explain why adventure is essential for our wellbeing and draws lessons from Belinda’s more than two decades of experience leading groups into the wilderness around the globe and the latest findings in neuroscience to show how adventure can help in managing anxiety and overcoming fear, finding self-worth and building interpersonal connections, to helping people be happier, healthier, and more playful.

In our interview we discuss about Belinda’s path to becoming an adventurer, her definition of adventure and why everyone should have more adventure in their life and what living a legendary life, your best life means to her. Her advice to other’s over 40 who may be viewing turning 40 negatively and three life lessons she has learned in life.

We also talk about her recently released book: Adventure Revolution: The life-changing power of choosing challenge which is the first book to explain why adventure is essential to wellbeing and why we should all look to add more adventure to our lives.
