Ensuring All Young People Have the Opportunity to Succeed

With our Legend Stories Project we look to share with you the inspiring stories of people who have found and are living their purpose. People who are making a difference and looking to postively impact and change the world.

Today I have the pleasure of speaking to Ricky Munday who is a chartered accountant, adventurer, expedition leader, non-profit founder, inspirational speaker, polar ambassador and humanitarian. Ricky grew up in a council estate in Glasgow but went on to qualify as a CA, as well as completing the Marathon des Sables, a 150-mile ultramarathon in the Sahara desert, the toughest foot race in the world. He has also completed 20 mountaineering expeditions across 6 continents and successfully summited Mount Everest in 2018. He is also the founder of a social enterprise Inspire Alpine which has a mission of ensuring all young people especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds have the opportunity to succeed.

Ricky started his career in corporate banking but found the work was not fulfilling or meaningful and he was not really using his potential. This lead him to rethink and pursue something that had always been an interest of his which was working for the Red Cross. It was his postings with the Red Cross in Dharfur and Haiti this that helped him define his purpose which he says is to support the world’s most vulnerable people.

It is this purpose that saw him found Inspire Alpine which has a vision of a world where all young people have the opportunity to succeed and where they look to close the attainment gap between young people from the richest and poorest backgrounds.

Ricky also discusses his passion for adventure and the personal challenges these present and how it is this that is helping him on his journey to realize his potential. We talk about how setting big goals or audacious goals and working towards achieving has helped him combat the lack of self-esteem and self-confidence he had in his younger years. Something which lead him to sabotaging himself and was preventing him realizing his potential.

We talk about how challenges help you grow personally in two parts. Firstly, through the positive experience and confidence building aspect of accomplishing your goals. Secondly, through the realization that there is no failure unless you completely give up. That if you do not succeed you don’t fail rather that it is a stepping stone to your future succes especially if you learn from not succeeding and then try again until you finally accomplish your goal.

Ricky also shares his definition of a legendary life, why we all should add more adventure to our lives and his top three life lessons.

Our talk will have you inspired to discover your own purpose and realize that you have all the resources right now to live this purpose and make a difference in the world.
